About the artist
Jonathan Hill (Wilmington, DE) is a graphic designer and painter whose practice moves fluidly between digital design and hand painted work. Hill’s pieces often read like a visual journal: experimental, process-driven, and guided by intuition. He uses repetition and deliberate imperfection to reveal fragmented, intimate moments—parts of the self that are usually hidden—inviting viewers to find a reflection of their own complexities.
From the artist (selected responses)
Can you introduce yourself?
“My name is Jonathan Hill. I am a graphic designer and painter born and based in Wilmington, Delaware.”
How did your journey as an artist begin?
“I've always been interested in the arts since I could remember; always drawing people and faces any chance I got as a kid. With my love for the arts and creative expression, I knew I wanted to make a career out of it. Though painting seemed more like a hobby at the time, I used my knowledge of traditional techniques and applied it to graphic design; an entirely unfamiliar medium that would soon become my profession.”
What themes or ideas are central to your work right now?
A lot of my early work was experimental and a way to creatively expand at a time I did not have the physical space to. Soon after, I realized those early pieces acted as a creative journal; as if I let my subconscious guide each outcome. I want to highlight the fragmented pieces that people typically do not see; the parts of one self that are kept secret or never brought to light. By merging the worlds of paint and design, I can open a door and share moments I think many of us have, but may be too afraid to share.
What do you hope people feel or take away when they engage with your pieces?
I hope people can see a part of themselves in my work in more ways than one. I want them to know the fragmented pieces are what makes them complexly beautiful.
What challenges do you encounter in your practice, and how do you navigate them?
Overanalyzing can be a blessing and a curse! At times, it can be overwhelming and affect creative decisions, but when used correctly, it pushes my artwork to new levels.
